Description
The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New... London: Charles Bill, 1703. 8vo, ruled in red throughout, occasional small, neat tears and repairs [ESTC N32302? but NT title 1702]; [bound with] The Psalms of David in Meeter [sic.] [Edinburgh: George Mosman, 1693]. 8vo, some dampstaining, manuscript notes to rear flyleaf [ESTC R18352]; in a contemporary black morocco cottage-roof style binding with a fore-edge inscription quoting the first half of Proverbs 12:4, in this case rubbed but can be translated as: A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown [New International Version], the initials I.A. in black morocco gilt to front endpaper, covers and spine rubbed with some chipping to spine ends and corners
Footnote
Note: The ESTC [N32302] states that the New Testament title-page should be dated 1703, however in this copy it is dated 1702, whilst the gatherings are complete. The ESTC does not mention this variation, and it is not mentioned in Darlow & Moule [874]. The fore-edge inscription suggests that this Bible belonged to a woman, perhaps as a wedding gift to a new bride.
