Note: Prior to Selected Essays, both manuscripts had been published, one in The Hudson Review, and the second in Mosaic. MacDiarmid rewrote both pieces for Jonathan Cape. However, Even the Least of These, an essay exploring MacDiarmid's own Scottish nationalism, did not appear in the collection.
