Description
Bookplate of Mary Gill, [1926], pencil, on reverse of postal cover addressed to Eric Gill at Capel-y-ffin and franked Birmingham, 1926, image size 6 x 3.4cm, sheet size 15.3 x 9cm, show-through from address [cf. Skelton P371];
Tree and Burin, 1929, pencil, signed and dated 'EG 20.5.'29', annotated 'for D C Book of EG engravings', 11.4 x 18cm, tipped to card mount, typescript catalogue description pasted to verso of mount [cf. Skelton P176 and P188-9, the wood-engraving first published in 1920 as a poster for the Society of Wood-Engravings].
Together with: ink sketch of a prisoner beesching an angel, unsigned but very likely by Gill, possibly depicting the Liberation of Saint Peter, traces of pencil, image size 5 x 5cm, sheet size 7.9 x 10.2cm; and a pencil list of sculptures on 3 sheets each with address in blind at head (11 New Square, Lincoln's Inn), in envelope with typescript label 'Eric Gill: MS. list of his sculptures. An important document in that it shows the stones which were his own work & some of the owners (Rothenstein, Rupert Brooke, Howard de Walden)')
