Footnote
Note: Gill originally executed this design in 1917 as a wood-engraving after a crucifix displayed in a window at York Minster (Skelton P89), and used it as the basis for the crucifixion scene in his Stations of the Cross in Westminster Cathedral, completed in 1918. His annotations suggest that the present drawing was intended as a study of the Westminster carving. A version of the design in gold leaf was sold at Bonhams, 29th May 2013 (lot 94).
Provenance: Property of an English collector.
