Mezzotint of Lieutenant-Colonel Banastre Tarleton (1754-1833). London: J.R. Smith, 11th October 1782. Plate: 65.4 × 39.8cm, framed 72 x 47.5cm. Some areas of foxing, tear to lower edge, crease across corner bottom left (not examined out of frame)
Footnote
The son of a landscape painter, Smith focused on printmaking and engraving. He reproduced c.40 works by Sir Joshua Reynolds as mezzotints of which this is one. Tarleton fought in the American Civil War and was a Whig member of parliament for Liverpool for twenty years. The Reynolds portrait was commissioned by Tarleton's brother for their mother Jane.
