Footnote
Sir James Clark (1788-1870), 1st baronet, was physician-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria from her accession to the throne in 1837 until his retirement in 1860. He received his formative medical education as a naval surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars, subsequently moving to Rome, where he treated John Keats during his final illness. He was the author of works including A Treatise on Pulmonary Consumption (1835), and notably introduced Victoria to Florence Nightingale, thereby helping her nursing reforms achieve wider notice. 'Above all he was to be remembered for his devotion to the welfare of the queen and the royal family, especially the prince consort, whom he advised regularly on matters of medical science and education' (ODNB).
