Description
Numbers 1-10 and 12-22 (without The Heron, number 11). London: Collins, 1948-71. First editions, 21 volumes, 8vo, original green cloth, with the dust jackets (none price-clipped), fading to cloth of Redstart, Yellow Wagtail and Trout, a few spines slightly rolled, variable light spotting to dust jackets (chiefly to flaps and rear panels) and occasionally to edges of textblocks, Fleas, Flukes & Cuckoos jacket slightly faded along spine and head of jacket front panel Herring Gull's World jacket with two repaired closed tears to front panel, Birds of the London Area jacket similarly faded and with short closed tear to head of front panel [Bernhard & Loe M1A-10A & 12A-22A]

Note: The Hawfinch, The Wood Pigeon and The Mole are each in the first-issue binding; The Badger contains an autograph letter signed from the author Ernest Neal to Dr I. D. Pennie dated 1949 ('I was glad to have up-to-date information about the badger in Sutherland ...').
Provenance: From the library of Dr Ian Durance Pennie (1916-2002), Scottish physician and ornithologist. Pennie was co-founder and vice-president of the Scottish Ornithologists' Club, and contributed numerous articles to journals including the Scottish Naturalist, British Birds and the SOC's own Scottish Birds. He spent most of his career in Sutherland, serving as the Sutherland correspondent for the SOC's annual Scottish bird report, and was remembered in his obituary as a 'major contributor to Scottish ornithology' (Scottish Birds, 2002, pp. 57-8).
