Description
1) To Jean Douglas, Countess of Selkirk (née Wedderburn, c.1786-1871), Abbotsford, 1 September 1826, a graceful apology for missing her letter during his absence at Drumlanrig (seat of the dukes of Buccleuch) and subsequently with his son in Fife, including a quotation from an Irish folk song and mention of 'the hills with which your Ladyships kindness has made me acquainted', single bifolium of wove paper (22.4 x 18cm, watermark 1825), written on one side, black mourning border and autograph address panel on verso of conjugate leaf, folded for posting, franking stamps and black wax seal, Scott's signature slightly blotted;
2) To the Lord President [of the Court of Session, i.e. Charles Hope, Lord Granton, 1763-1851], Abbotsford, c.1827, referring to an appearance at court and expressing regret for 'Sir Roberts illness', single bifolium of wove paper (22.4 x 18cm, watermark 1827), written on one side, autograph address panel and red wax seal on verso of conjugate leaf, small closed tears at intersections of folds
