from: Sir John Ross (1777-1856), naval officer and Arctic explorer, London, 26th December 1834, 2 pp., to the Earl of Selkirk, requesting assistance in standing as Conservative MP for Wigtown Burghs in the forthcoming general election ('my friend Dr Macculloch ... assures me ... that your Conservative principles are as high as they can be, while I assure you that they cannot be stronger than my own');
Thomas Campbell (1777-1841), Scottish poet, 1821, 1 p., to the Countess of Selkirk, responding to an earlier letter probably relating the death of the Earl of Selkirk, retaining envelope;
