Note:
A letter of recommendation in favour of Lieutenant Berenger, an officer from Valence described as 'one of the first to rally to the standard of liberty' ('un des premiers qui se soit enrollé sous les drapeaux de la liberté'), addressed to Napoleon as commander-in-chief of the Army of Italy on the day of his triumphant entry into Milan, five days after his victory at Lodi.
