Footnote
Note: William Wells Brown (1814-1184) was born into slavery in Kentucky and managed to escape successfully to Ohio in 1834. Between 1836 and 1845, he was active in the abolitionist movement in Buffalo, New York, where he helped to hide escaped slaves in steamboats heading for Canada. In 1849, Brown left the United States and headed to the UK to lecture against slavery. He remained in the country until 1854, when his freedom was purchased by a British couple (until this point, he was still at risk of being captured as a fugitive). This work recounts his experiences of travelling in Europe and educating people about the horrors of slavery.
