Footnote
Note: The title page states that this is, "a new edition, very much enlarged" - this is in fact the second edition of the essay but in many ways it is a very different work from the 1798 first edition. Malthus claims that this is due to the lack of reference works he had available at the time of writing the first edition. "The essay was highly influential in the progress of thought in early nineteenth century Europe...if the natural increase in population occurs the food supply becomes insufficient and the size of the population is checked by "misery"" [(PMM 251) Amex 291, Goldsmith 18640, Kress B.4701]
The Reply is in first edition, and appears to be rare, with a Copac search citing only 4 copies [Goldsmith 19211]
