Footnote
Note: Manasseh ben Israel (1604-57), a renowned preacher to the Amsterdam Jewish community, founded the first Hebrew printing press at Amsterdam in 1626 and published many works in Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese over the next three decades. He was Spinoza's teacher, a friend of Hugo Grotius and Rembrandt and during the 1650s was a key figure in the partially successful negotiations for the return of Jews to England.
