Note: Ramsay Macdonald had succeeded Stanley Baldwin as Prime Minister on 5 June 1929. Francis Bourne was Roman Catholic archbishop of Westminster, W.R. Inge was Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral and Cosmo Lang was Archbishop of Canterbury. Churchill had returned to the back benches after defeat in the general election of 1929.
