Stapleton originally published the book at Antwerp in 1565 with a dedication to Queen Elizabeth in the hope that if she read it she would return to the Roman Catholic faith. This second edition has a dedication to James I. Based on written sources and verbal communications Bede's History is the primary source for British history from 597 to 731. STC 1779
