Autograph letter signed, to Colonel Forrest, apologising for not being able to dine with him, "I preach I believe at 7 o'clock at night, just when bold dragoons are going to dinner... I affected your sister to tears by pointing out a cupboard in the side board out of which I once prigged an olive as a child", 1 page, White Swan, Halifax, Feb. 14 [1857]; with envelope addressed to Col. Forrest

Note: Colonel W. Forrest's uncle Major Carmichael Smith - the original of Thackeray's Col. Newcome - married Thackeray's mother. Colonel Forrest transferred from the 11th Hussars to the 4th Irish Dragoons, became Colonel of the 11th Hussars, and fought in the Crimean war.
