Gibbons about painting the actor Bill Squires's portrait, 1940's and 1950's, mostly from Charleston, Firle, Sussex, "I see that you do not think the portrait is very like Bill.... people's expressions naturally alter with everyone they meet. What I have tried to go for in my sketch is the structure of his face... perhaps as time goes on you can imagine a smile to come to his lips! Not that I got the impression  that Bill is habitually melancholy"
