Footnote: The majority of the letters are to Professor David Thomas Ansted, Professor of Geology at King's College, London, and at the College of Civil Engineers, at Putney, from 1845 and Assistant Secretary to the Geological Society in London 1844-47. They include a number of replies from foreign geologists, many responding to a request from the Geological Society in London for photographs of geologists who are foreign members or correspondents.
