Note: This panel formed part of a frieze which Neatby designed and painted for the new Norwich Union Headquarters Building in Norwich circa 1904. He was commissioned by the architect George Skipper who had previously used Neatby's designs to dramatic effect in his Royal Arcade of 1898-99.
W. J. Neatby originally trained as an architect but then worked at Burmantofts for the Leeds Fireclay Co., as designer & painter and in 1899 he took charge of Doulton's architectural department for the design and production of mural ceramics. He set up his own practice in London with E. Hollyer Hayes under the trade name of Neatby, Evans & Co., designers & manufacturers of furniture, metalwork and stained glass.
