Footnote
Patek Philippe lighters were produced in the 1970s to complement the highly popular Ellipse wristwatch model. These lighters were carved from a block of solid 18k gold with the rarest being decorated with enamel, such as this example. Research would indicate that less than 200 Ellipse lighters were produced.
There are seven known references of the Golden Ellipse lighter: Ref.9502 ('Louis Philippe': striped pattern), 9504 ('Ocean': woven pattern), 9505 ('Chevrons': chevron pattern), 9506 (red enamel), 9507 (blue enamel), 9508 (green enamel) and 9512-1 (chevron pattern with enamel Omani flag and Khanjar insignia). The reference 9506 in red enamel is rumoured, as none are known to have appeared publicly.
Interestingly, these lighters were commissioned by Patek Philippe from Colibri, the French lighter manufacturer who made the Golden Gun in the James Bond Film ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’, that was assembled by the villain, Francisco Scaramanga, from a lighter, fountain pen, cigarette case and cufflink.
