Footnote
The England Patent 286838 was filed by R.V and F.E.L Clarke in 1927 for an improved friction lighter. The L&R reference on the strike wheel is for Lawson & Raphael Ltd, 137-141 Regent Street, London. In researching other examples, these were clearly made for Movado in very small numbers most likely by hand in England. The underside of the bezel and removable screw-caps are stamped with the last three digits of the case number, 914. Christies Geneva sold an identical example, numbered 870,043, in November 2009. Later examples found were also signed Movado Factories on the case. Numbers 870029, 870082, and 870087 have also appeared publicly, making this the earliest example known.
