James Hall Cranstoun's view over Castle Sands depicts waves crashing energetically against a rocky promontory, which is surmounted by St. Andrews Castle.
The Castle has a rich history. From the twelfth century it served as a fortified residence for the bishops and archbishops of St. Andrews, and it was destroyed and re-built during the Wars of Independence as the site changed hands between the Scots and the English.
