Footnote
Peter Howson contributed several drawings and an oil painting towards the Glasgow Mitchell Library's 'Inspired' exhibition, which celebrated the life of Robert Burns. The exhibition brought together work by nearly fifty artists including Tracy Emin, Douglas Gordon and the Chapman Brothers.
Howson's work sought to dispel the sentimental, populist representations of Robert Burns by presenting the poet as a desolate figure. He reflected that 'I have never felt happy about the way Burns' image is used in a way which I think degrades him. I have always considered him to be the greatest poet and songwriter that ever lived so I am really pleased to have the opportunity to be involved in 'Inspired'.'
