Footnote
From the mid-1990s contemporary artist Sarah Morris has been making abstract paintings and films exploring ‘urban, social and bureaucratic typologies’, based on different cities and close inspection of architectural details, which included the ‘Midtown Paintings’.
The ‘Midtown’ works were based on an area around her studio in the late 1990s in New York (which was situated near Times Square at the time), and they recalled the glass and grid facades of mid-century towers along Park and Sixth Avenues, being a celebration of the city’s vibrancy and energy.
