Footnote
Born in Cumbria in 1945, Edward Teasdale took the design world by storm in the 1980s with his use of reclaimed materials in contemporary furniture at a time when environmentalism was extremely influential on design theory and practise. Teasdale’s restrained approach produces a modesty and utilitarianism that is immediately apparent in his multi-functional constructions. Initially working on a modest scale, Teasdale’s boxes have grown in scale through his sourcing of larger pieces of wood that had been washed up along the Morecambe Bay coastline. The importance of materiality is never lost in these works, which achieve an elegance and serenity in their simple form that highlights the soft weathered colours and textures of the wood.
