This poster was part of an advertising campaign series entitled ‘To Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. The series comprised a selection of follies and sometimes unusual attractions, encouraging the public to explore the British countryside.
One of many female British artists who worked for Shell, Pamela Drew (1910-1989) produced this commission for the company in 1936 and was best known for her paintings of marine and aviation subjects. John Knox was a Scottish minister, theologian and writer who was a leader of the country’s Reformation. He was the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.
