Footnote
Gwen Mullins was an important figure in the development of British studio weaving in the mid-20th century, combining a close understanding of traditional handweaving techniques with the increasingly modernist concerns of the period. At Graffham in West Sussex, she established a thriving craft centre and, together with her daughter Barbara, developed Graffham Weavers, providing training for a new generation of textile artists, among them Mary Farmer. Mullins was also an important patron of the crafts: through the Gwen Mullins Trust she supported young makers with grants for training, apprenticeships and equipment, with Peter Collingwood among those who benefited from her support.
