Klaus and Gertrud Anschel were the founders and owners of The Anschel Gallery on the King’s Road in Chelsea, London, which they ran from 1962 to 1982. Klaus Anschel, born in Düsseldorf in 1921, fled Germany in 1938 and settled in Melbourne, where he later served in the Australian Army alongside other refugee volunteers. In Australia he met Gertrud (née Perger), who had emigrated from Vienna in 1939, and together they became part of Melbourne’s vibrant post-war art scene, forming connections with artists such as Mirka Mora, John Perceval, Arthur Boyd and Charles Blackman.
In 1961, after importing Picasso ceramics for exhibition at the Australian Museum of Modern Art, Klaus moved into dealing full-time. The Anschels relocated to London the following year and opened their gallery, which handled modern and Australian works and developed a particular focus on jewellery, ceramics and, increasingly, original graphics. Their stockroom became known for its discerning selection of unusual and rare pieces, including works by Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, David Hockney and Victor Vasarely. The gallery built a loyal following including Princess Margaret, Lord Snowden and Peter Sellers - and remains recognised for its contribution to the post-war London art market.
