Footnote
"To attire oneself is to move from the mundane to the extraordinary. I want the objects to make statements about the being, the existence, the identity of the person wearing them...I want them to be something to be looked at. So for me they are sculpture."
Celebrated Japanese artist Nakano Kaoru creates sculptural brooches from washi, the traditional handmade paper made from paper-mulberry fibres. Through folding, rolling and binding the paper into layered forms, she produces intricate, organic structures that are both lightweight and durable. Her work transforms a humble traditional material into striking contemporary jewellery that blurs the boundary between adornment and sculpture.
