Footnote
Jagger was widely recognised during the 1920s and 1930s for his portraits of children, frequently depicting fair-haired boys. Several large-scale commissions were produced for aristocratic and affluent patrons. The present painting is comparable to Brian (Bonhams, London, 22 November 2017, £18,750), sharing similar colouring of the hair and eyes, though the reversed hairline suggests an unidentified sitter.
The work may also relate to Jagger’s commercial commissions for the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, his employer during the First World War. His illustrations were used in major campaigns of the late 1920s, including Players Cigarettes, Horlicks, and Clarks Threads.
We are grateful to Timothy Dickson for his kind assistance in the cataloguing of the present work.
