Footnote
‘For twenty-five years I worked within the luxury automotive industry, hand-making bespoke pieces for Rolls Royce, Bentley and the Morgan Motor Company. My accumulated knowledge of traditional skills passed on through the trade, coupled with new technologies and production processes, has provided a unique and original approach to making that extends beyond and complements the traditions of silversmithing.’
Kevin Grey is an award winning silversmith, who is challenging the notions of silversmithing and exploring it as a medium of decorative sculptural art. He creates unique works, employing TIG welding and laser techniques, to produce sculptural art works with a high level of precision and scale, tackling what might be made with silver, in comparison to past achievements with the material. He noted that ‘The starting point for each piece is an emotional response: a desire to express a moment or set of ideas in physical form. These can be as varied as a scientific concept, or lived experience of historical events.’
Grey has been presented with the highest award for Designer Silversmiths at The Goldsmiths Company Awards three times, and his work can be found in important private and public collections including The Goldsmiths’ Company in London, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff and the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia.
