Footnote
Offered for the first time at auction, the current owner was apparently gifted the watch by Saudi Royalty in 1976 and has remained in their possession since.
The Royal Oak was first released in 1972 at Basel watch fair. Designed by one of the most famous Swiss watch designers Gerald Genta, it is widely considered the world’s first luxury stainless-steel sports watch. The Royal Oak was Audemars Piguet’s response to the quartz crisis which swept away many Swiss watch brands due to the influx of cheaper, more accurate quartz watches. With its instantly recognisable tonneau shaped case and integrated stainless-steel bracelet, the Royal Oak became a saviour for Audemars Piguet and changed the watch industry as a whole. Now considered one of the most iconic watches amongst collectors, the A and B series are especially sought after.
