Description
The fluttering flag, set throughout with calibré-cut rubies, the seams pinned with circular cabochon garnets, centrally adorned with a brilliant and single-cut diamond navette featuring a lion rampant, the body set with calibré-cut and circular cabochon rubies, length of flagpole 3.6cm, fitted case by Garrard & Co. Ltd. 112, Regent Street., W.1
Accompanied by a photo album commemorating the launch of the ship Clan Menzies on the 22nd of January 1958.
Provenance
Gifted to Mrs Helen Macdonald on the occasion of the launch of the ship MV Clan Menzies on the 22nd of January 1958. The ship was built at Greenock Yard on the south bank of the Firth of Clyde, by the Clan Line Steamers Ltd. (Cayzer, Irvine & Company Ltd). The company was in operation in one incarnation or another from 1877. In the 1930s it became the largest cargo carrying concern in the world. The red flag with a lion rampant was the house flag for the Clan Line company.
MV Clan Menzies operated both as a passenger ship and also as a cargo ship. Of interest was that the ship hosted the popular “Lima Club”, a social club founded on board while docked near the port in Lima, Peru in August 1964.
