Hans Hansen (1884 -1940) trained as a silversmith in the Carl M. Cohrs Silverware Factory from 1903 until 1906. In 1906 Hansen established his own workshop specialising in flatware. In 1930, his son Karl Gustav Hansen (1914 - 2002) joined the firm as an apprentice and in 1932 launched ‘The Future' range introducing modernist silver jewellery to the repertoire. From 1935 - 1938 Karl Gustav studied at the Kunstakademiets Billedhuggerskole at the same time as working in the Hansen workshop. When his father died unexpectedly in 1940, Karl Gustav, at the age of just twenty five, took over the running the company. The company survived World War II and in 1953, Bent Gabrielsen joined the company and became the lead jewellery designer until 1969. After 1969 Karl Gustav became more involved with the design side once more and collaborated with Henry Moore and Lynn Chadwick in the 1970s. Karl Gustav Hansen was the CEO at Hans Hansen until 1987.
In the 1970s Hansen's distinctive jewellery designs became part of the offerings of the Georg Jensen group. The Han Hansen firm was ultimately acquired by the Royal Scandinavia Group in 1991, which merged with Georg Jensen 1992, and are still producing Hansen designs today.
