Footnote
“Omphacite jadeite” has been known to gemmologists for many decades and was generally considered to be a darker shade than jadeite jade. However recent advancements in testing have lead to a re-examination of this preconceived notion. Advanced Raman testing shows that many items which typically would have been classified as jadeite jade were in fact found to be omphacite jadeite.
“Pieces whose gemological properties were absolutely identical to jadeite—appearance, color, texture, RI, SG, and absorption spectra—were identified as omphacite by their Raman spectra. Even some fine-quality pieces with the appearance and characteristics of Burmese jadeite fell into this category.” McClure, Shane F., “The Jadeite/Omphacite Nomenclature Question”, GIA, 10th April 2012.
