Edward McCartan (1879-1947) was born in Albany, New York. He studied at the Pratt Institute and at the Art Students League of New York. He then studied in Paris for three years, before returning to the USA in 1910. In 1914 he became the director of the sculpture department of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York City. Eleanor Mary Mellon was among those he taught during his career. He was influenced by ancient Greek sculptures and is well known for his decorative, elegant bronzes produced in the 1920s.
