Footnote
It is noted in Marcilhac's catalogue raisonné (p.1023) that the first cover for the vase produced in February 1921 was damaged during cooling and a further lid was subsequently executed April of the same year. This is a good reminder of the technical challenges of creating works in glass. The cover in many ways can be seen as a work of sculpture in terms of both its scale and the density of the glass itself, and this left the work far more vulnerable to damage during the annealing process. Both the temperature and the speed of cooling are critical and getting it exactly right does not always go according to plan even for master glass makers.
