Johnston of Sands Silver collection:
This collection is presented for sale by the descendants of Sir Christopher Nicholson Johnston, Lord Sands KBE, FRSE.
Much of the collection is engraved with the Johnston crest or the names of ancestors such as the Wellwood's of Garvock, including the initials of Laurence Johnston & Christian Blaw the Daughter of James Blaw the covenanter.
Lord Sands was born on 18 October 1857 at Mansion House of Sands in Fife, the son of James Johnston of Sands, Laird of the extensive Sands estate in Culross where the Johnston's were a prominent family for many century's.
After training as a lawyer he made rapid progress in the profession: Advocate (1880); Advocate Depute (1892); Sheriff (1899-1916); Kings Counsel (10 June 1902). He was Procurator of the Church of Scotland (1907-1918).
He was elected MP for Edinburgh & St Andrews University and served between 1916 and 1917 before he stood down when he became a Senator of the College of Justice, a senior judicial post.
He was knighted in 1917. In 1925 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, serving as their Vice-President 1932-4.
He died in Edinburgh on 26 February 1934 aged 76. He is buried in the modern extension to Dean Cemetery off Queensferry Road in western Edinburgh. The grave lies against the north wall in the modern equivalent of Lord's Row in the original cemetery, forming one of a group of law lords buried together.
