Footnote
Heralrdy:
These appear to be the arms of
Sir Jacob Downing, 4th baronet of East Hatley, Cambridgeshire.
He was son of Charles Downing, Comptroller of the Household, and Sarah Garrard.
and was heir to his cousin, Sir George Downing KCB MP, 3rd baronet.
Sir George died without issue in 1749 having bequeathed (1717) his property to
his nephew, Jacob, with the proviso that if Jacob's line failed the estate should
found Downing College, Cambridge.
Although Sir Jacob married a Miss Price he died without issue in 1764
and after much litigation Downing College was founded in 1800.
