marked to the hinge, Ivan Savelevich Britzin, St Petersburg, 1899-1908, the ivory box of plain square form, the lid with later applied two coloured armorial double headed eagle for Russia, cast foliate decorated thumb piece, and a plain plaque
Footnote
Originally a Byzantine symbol, the double-headed eagle was adopted by the Russian tsars. One eagle head represents the East and the other represents the West. The horseman in the middle has been described as St. George.
