the cover deeply carved to the buff ground with three fully blossoming peonies and foliage, the box with two similar flower heads, buds and leaves, the interior and base lacquered black, the base bearing an incised maker's mark reading 'Yang Mao zao' (Made by Yang Mao) on the left
