Description
upright with slightly inward sides with outward flaring rim, the transparent glass enamelled in blue, green, iron-red, white, yellow, and gilt, the body with four large medallions containing Arabic benedictory inscriptions, all on a ground of luscious floral and foliate motifs, the rim with a band of continuous repeat wavering floral motifs on a blue ground, the base with a wide band of Arabic inscriptions that comprise ‘Glory to our lord, the sultan, the learned king, the just’ encircling a Mamluk-style emblem containing a dagger

This 19th century bowl copies the shape of a Mamluk metal-prototype - the most well known being the 14th century Baptistiere de Saint Louis profusely inlaid with silver and housed in the Louvre, Paris.
