Footnote
Sadequain (1930–1987) was one of Pakistan’s leading painters, calligraphers, and muralists. Born in Amroha, India, he moved to Karachi after Partition and rose to prominence in the late 1940s through the Progressive Writers’ and Artists’ Movement. His international breakthrough came with the 1961 Biennale de Paris.
He created major public murals and pioneered a modern style of Islamic calligraphy, blending bold script with figurative imagery inspired by desert cacti. Widely honoured in his lifetime, Sadequain is regarded as one of South Asia’s most influential modern artists.
