Footnote
This painting and the following lot illustrate cross-cultural traditions between China and India. In the 19th century, Chinese artists in India, often brought via the Canton trade, specialised in reverse glass painting and portraits for the Indian elite, merchants, and royalty, notably in Bombay, Satara, Kutch, and Mysore. They created personalised portraits, idealised images of courtesans, and depictions of Indian gods.
