Note:
Born in Kilmurry, County Kilkenny, Mildred Anne Butler studied art in London at Westminster School of Art under Frank Calderon. A talented painter, she worked in oil and watercolour and became known for her landscapes, genre and animal subjects. After her studies she spent a period in Newlyn, Cornwall, where she came in touch with the artists from the Newlyn School. She was strongly influenced by their realist approach to paint, reminiscent of the Barbizon School in France. Her success came when she started exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1889 to 1902. After this prolific period, she went back to her family home in Kilkenny where she spent the rest of her life painting the gardens, farmyards, plants, birds and animals of her beloved county. Her work now hangs in major galleries in Ireland and England.
