Note:
Born in Dublin, for nearly thirty years Desmond Carrick worked in the laboratory of the Guinness brewery following his father's footsteps. Despite this career he was able to pursue his passion for art through evening classes at the National College of Art. In 1951 he was commissioned to paint a mural in the Guinness visitors' centre in St. James' Gate and in the same year gathered recognition as a painter when he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy for the first time. In 1968 he was elected full member of the RHA and became one of its most eminent and active members, serving as Secretary until 1982. A trip to Spain in the 1950s ignited a lifelong passion for light and colour which he reversed in his Irish and Spanish country scenes. He worked with a wide varierty of media, including litography and stained glass, although he is best known for his oils and watercolours characterised by a strong impressionist style. His work is represented in private collections in the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
