Footnote
Note: John Blundall met the artist, designer, stage manager and director Peter Jackson in Birmingham and later acquired this extraordinary archive. The archive contains Jackson's output as a designer of toy theatres, both published and unpublished, demonstrating his great knowledge of and passion for the history of theatre and stage costume. The material consists of numerous theatres, characters, scenery and original drawings of actor portraits.
Published material includes not only the well-known theatres, but an early Christmas pantomime theatre; original pen and ink drawings of Harlequin characters performed by actors such as Joseph Grimaldi.
Amongst the most important unpublished material is Jackson's version of Tchaikovsky's 'Sleeping Beauty', based on the designs of Leon Bakst for Diaghilev's 1921 production in London; with an acting text, original pen and ink drawings of characters and scenery and a number of number of alternative prosceniums.
'The Siege of Rhodes' by Sir William Davenant based on the designs by John Webb for the first performance at Rutland House, London in 1656; with original pen and ink drawings for the theatre, characters and scenery.
'Restoration Theatre' is a working model of the Duke's theatre in Dorset Gardens 1671-1709. There are hand-painted characters and scenery for 'The Rehearsal' by George Villiers Duke of Buckingham.
The archive also contains a number of different toy theatre prosceniums and other related items.
