Footnote
Bellon was one of the foremost French collectors of the 19th century. Having made his fortune in the textile industry, he turned his attention to collecting archaeological objects from across the Mediterranean. Until the late 1870s, he took part in archaeological excavations in the Arras region alongside Auguste Ternick. It was here that he discovered Gallo-Roman glassworks, which would later form the most important part of his collection. His collection came to wider attention at the Retrospective Exhibition of French Art, held at the Trocadéro in 1896, where it was exhibited alongside those of Auguste Dutuit and the Protat printers. Today, parts of the collection are held at the Museum of National Antiquities in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the Petit Palais in Paris, the Louvre, and the Berck-sur-Mer Museum.
