The shallow, thumbprint-like depressions on the surface of this meteorite are called regmaglypts. They form as the rock streaks through the atmosphere at incredible speed, partially melting in its descent to Earth. These natural sculptures make orientated meteorites like the present example especially striking, revealing the dynamic forces that act on extraterrestrial objects before they land.
