Footnote
Distantly related to plesiosaurs, the small Keichousaurus hui was a species of marine reptile that lived around 240 million years ago in the warm, shallow coastal seas that covered parts of what is now southern China. These were clear, tropical lagoons dotted with reefs and teeming with shellfish, small fish, and other early marine reptiles. With its slender neck and paddle-like limbs, Keichousaurus likely moved gracefully through the water, hunting small prey among coral outcrops and seafloor sediments.
